My mother's father, also Josef, must have experienced something similar, though like Krystyna he had an older brother, Jan, here ( who was “first.”) You have made me feel as if I walked into my grandfather’s story, a sad one. He married a woman who didn’t want him and they lost two children before my mother was born. It is too pessimistic. The martyr does not live "to create more like him." First, he becomes a martyr only after he is dead. Second, he lives his pre-martyrdom life in order to encourage others to live well. One is unlikely to become a martyr unless one had lived a life replete with fortitude. Remembering someone as a martyr is a clarion call for others to live well. Christianity has flourished owing to its martyrs (among others), who inspired others to develop fortitude and endurance.

Sally Bosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08069289165703089920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6142857971379251277.post-38424937024216829482016-08-04T10:12:06.114-07:002016-08-04T10:12:06.114-07:00This is a brilliant poem. As Oriana wrote the introduction explaining the family history and background to the poem does immeasurably add to the beauty and poignancy of the poem. It is a gorgeous piece of writing, very visual and cinematic as well as raw and emotional. In many regards it seems that we, the children of Poland's suffering, share whole threads of love, loss and "absence" and it is good to feel thus connected to people who otherwise we do not know at all. xxMartin Stepeknoreply@blogger.com
